Volkswagen has updated details for the upcoming Amarok 2023

The new Amarok was created from scratch and shares almost nothing with its predecessor, of which more than 830,000 units have been sold since 2010. It forgoes its Volkswagen roots in favor of Ford's revised T6 chassis, which served as the foundation for the most recent Ranger. The workhorse is, of course, more than just a rebadged version of the midsize truck from the Blue Oval, as VW went to great measures to give the vehicle its own distinctive look.

Exterior and Interior overview

At launch, the new ute will be offered in single cab and double cab body configurations, with the latter measuring 5,350 millimeters in length (210.6 inches). The wheelbase has also been extended by 173 mm (6.8 in), making it longer than the pickup it replaces by 96 mm (3.8 in). The overall length is now a generous 3,270 mm (128.7 in). The overhangs have been reduced for greater off-road performance by improving the approach and departure angles as a result of the axle spacing increasing more than the actual overall length.

Depending on the choice of wheel and tire, the width has shrunk by 34 mm (1.4 in) to 1910 mm (75.2 in), but the height has risen by 10 mm (0.4 in) to 1888 mm (74.3 in). VW will sell the Amarok with regular 17-inch steel wheels, but the fancy ones will get a 21-inch alloy set for the first time, while we're on the subject of shoes.

Speaking of deviating from the norm, the fording depth of the 2023 AMAROK has been increased dramatically from 500 mm to 800 mm, and all-wheel drive will be the norm in many regions. Customers can choose between two 4Motion installations, one with a permanently installed all-paw setup and the other with a configurable 4x4 setup.

Turbocharging has been prepared for a gasoline mill, four diesel engines, and a third diesel engine. VW Commercial Vehicles will offer the new Amarok in Africa with a 2.0 TDI engine producing 148 horsepower (110 kW), while other territories will receive an oil-burner with 168 horsepower (125 kW). Amaroks that cost more to fuel will use a bi-turbo four-pot engine with either 201 horsepower (150 kW) or 207 hp (154 kW).

3.0-liter V6 diesel engine with 238 horsepower (177 kW) or 247 hp will be the top-of-the-line model (184 kW). The next-generation Amarok will feature a 2.3-liter engine with 298 horsepower for areas where gasoline engines are favoured (222 kW). All engines producing 207 horsepower (154 kW) or more will come standard with a ten-speed automatic transmission, while the remainder will be mated to a six-speed automatic and a five- or six-speed manual transmission.

While the roof can carry a static load of 350 kg (772 lbs), adequate for a four-person roof tent that will be offered as an official accessory, VW is delighted to announce that the maximum payload capacity has increased to 1,160 kg (2,557 lbs). To give the Amarok the impression of an SUV, a hardtop cover for the cargo bed will once more be available as an option. The truck is equipped with a variety of features, including a snorkel and a bull bar.

The interior, where the vertical infotainment takes center stage, has also undergone a total makeover, in addition to the exterior. Depending on the model level, the touchscreen is either 10 or 12 inches and runs on a lightly modified version of Ford's SYNC 4. It is placed next to a digital instrument cluster that has a diagonal size of eight inches on more affordable versions and twelve inches on higher trims.

In 2023, VW plans to offer the Amarok in five different configurations: Amarok, Life, Style, the recently launched off-road-focused PanAmericana, and an Aventura that is more luxuriously geared. The truck comes packed with over 20 driver aid technologies, matrix LED headlights, and a Harman Kardon audio system that is not available on any other vehicle.

The brand-new Amarok will begin manufacturing in September at Ford's Silverton plant in Pretoria, South Africa. Nevertheless, VW Commercial Vehicles will keep producing the first-generation vehicle in Pacheco, Argentina, for markets in South America.
