Another performance VW sedan - JETTA GLI 2023

Volkswagen Jetta GLI (2023)

A sporty, little vehicle that demands to be driven enthusiastically is the Jetta GLI. The GLI, which is essentially a GTI hatchback with a trunk, is only available in one fully-loaded trim level, much like its turbocharged rival, the Honda Civic Si. A lively 4 cylinder turbocharged engine with 228 horsepower powers the front-wheel drive vehicle. The base transmission is a six-speed manual, but for a few additional dollars, you can choose an eight-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic to avoid shifting. While we like the GLI's array of high-end features, including its leather interior, Beats audio system, and heated and ventilated power front seats, a car this energetic needs better dancing shoes than its basic all-season rubber. It is significantly more enjoyable to drive than the regular Jetta, which was tested separately. However, the GLI could use a little more G-O when compared to rivals like the 286-hp Hyundai Elantra N.

What's New for 2023 Jetta?

For 2022, the Jetta GLI received a mid-cycle refresh. For 2023, there won't be any significant equipment changes. While the new GTI has switched to an upgraded version of MQB that has been sufficiently improved to obtain a Mk 8 designation from the factory, it still rides on the Mk 7 GTI's version of the MQB platform.

Pricing

Previously sold in base S or fully equipped Autobahn trim levels, the Jetta GLI is now only available in one specification and includes all of the extras that were previously only available on the Autobahn. This includes wireless charging, heated and ventilated power front seats, adjustable dampers, a digital gauge cluster, leather interior, a strong audio system, and a panoramic sunroof. Customers can still select a manual or automatic transmission, but the latter is more expensive.

Exterior & Interior overview

Engine , transmission and performance

A 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque powers the GLI. (This engine has a 241-hp variant for the Mk8 GTI.) A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is an option in addition to the normal six-speed manual transmission. No matter the transmission, acceleration is much faster than with the 158-hp engine in the base Jetta. In our tests, the six-speed manual GLI reached 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, beating out a Honda Civic Si with comparable equipment by 0.7 seconds.

However, rowing the stick-shift version was simple and enjoyable. The automatic's hesitation to downshift during vigorous cornering was our only issue with it. Speaking of corners, the Jetta GLI offers responsive steering, powerful brakes, and a comfortable ride thanks to its standard adaptive dampers. However, it could use a set of summer tires to match the hatchback brother's sticky cornering grip.

Fuel combustion & real world MPG

The Jetta GLI receives separate fuel-economy ratings since it shares a turbocharged four-cylinder with two different gearboxes. According to estimates, the six-speed manual transmission gets 26 mpg in the city and 37 mpg on the interstate. According to government statistics, models with the optional seven-speed automatic can expect to get 26 mpg in the city and 36 mpg on the highway. On our 75 mph fuel-economy route, which is a part of our thorough testing program, we tested a GLI with each gearbox, and both produced an amazing 36 mpg on the highway.
